The eThekwini municipality is embarking on a campaign to replace the vehicles in its fleet to strengthen the City’s service delivery efforts.

A report outlining the City’s need to purchase new vehicles was tabled at a full council meeting last week stating that the replacement of vehicles was critical to providing efficiency in service delivery, reducing repairs and maintenance and reducing fuel consumption.

Vehicles that are set for replacement include those used in the provision of water services, cleansing and solid waste, electricity, fire and emergency services as well as small plant operators among others.

The city has set aside R190.4 million in the 2017/18 financial year for the replacement of critical vehicle requirements as part of this undertaking.

Chairperson of the Human Settlements and Infrastructure Committee Councillor Mondli Mthembu says it is important to replace vehicles as it affects service delivery.

He notes that the report initially requested funding for three years, which was amended to one year so that the Executive Committee could review the matter annually.
