Modernisation of Saurimo airport, which began in 2011 and is expected to cost US$70 million, is due to be finished in August, the project’s resident inspector, Rui Queimada said in Saurimo, the capital of Angola’s Lunda Sul province.
According to the civil engineer, who was speaking to Angolan news agency Angop, the work includes building a passenger terminal, an airport apron capable of accommodating three Boeing 737 aircraft and some smaller aircraft, a taxiway and a new control tower.
“The metallic structure of the passenger terminal has been concluded and at the moment its covering is being placed, which will be finished this week, and specialised work such as electrics, air conditioning, water and sewage systems, have begun,” he said.
Queimada also said that the airport would have a moving walkway, a closed circuit television system, two or three check in desks, three x-ray machines, and that the project had been designed according to international aeronautical standards.
