Extreme weather conditions on Wednesday affected long-distance passenger trains and national roads around South Africa.

Electricity supply was also affected as Eskom battled to meet the high demand.

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) confirmed that Shosholoza Meyl trains between Johannesburg and Durban were cancelled due to heavy snowfall.

The agency’s Lawrence Venkile said rail lines were covered in snow.

Meanwhile, Eskom is still trying to restore power to various parts of the country, including KwaZulu-Natal.

At least 70 000 customers were affected after power lines were cut at main substations.

There were also delays on the N3 highway from Johannesburg to Durban following numerous road closures.

Several cars were trapped in the snow.

The road was reopened to traffic, but major delays were reported along the national road.

The N3 Toll Concession’s Andy Visser advised motorists to postpone their trips.

“It is dangerous because the roads are wet. Drivers really need to be cautious.”
