As a result of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) eviction order, truck drivers in the region will be vacating Kampala’s new taxi park.
The truck drivers have up to the 30th September to leave the park and in the meantime they are looking out for an alternative working space within the city. Mr. Charles Sserwadda, secretary General of the Uganda Pick-ups Drivers Association (UPDA) has urged drivers to remain calm as they research the various locations that have been referred to them. “We are still surveying the various opportunities to establish whether we can ably work within their means including paying rent and access by potential customers,” said Sserwadda.Drivers had threatened strike action as they felt that their leaders had failed to secure them new working space before the September deadline.
Speaking to East African Business Week, Mr. Richard Kakooza a member of the association noted that management of UPDA had delayed resolving the issue without a genuine reason. “Majority of the members had agreed to vacate the park to allow KCCA go on with renovation but the move is delayed by management,” Kakooza said.
