A year-on-year increase of 18.3 percent in the amount of cargo handled in the port sector and a 21.2 percent in the rail segment has been experienced by the Mozambican state port and rail manager Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) in 2013.
These figures were released during a recent meeting of the Board of Directors. In 2013 2,353 ships moored in Mozambique, which was an increase of 135 ships over 2012 resulting in the overall amount of cargo handled totalling 30.433 million tons against 25.725 million tons in 2012.For 2014 the company’s challenges include completing the railway between Moatize and Nacala, via Malawi, repairing and building new facilities at the port of Nacala, as well as building the new oil and gas terminal at the port of Palma which will then allow the Sena railroad to increase its capacity from 6.5 million tons to 20 million tons per year.
