Reducing road maintenance costs in Mozambique | Infrastructure news

By adopting low cost construction methods,Mozambique’s National Roads Administration (ANE) plans to reduce the cost of repairing and maintaining roads by US$95 million per year.

Silvestre Elias, national director for Road Maintenance said, “Heavy rains that had fallen in Mozambique had damaged many roads and bridges, resulting in the rising costs.”

The rain that fell at the beginning of the year in the Southern region(Gaza province), centre (Sofala and Zambézia) destroyed 400 kilometres of roads and some bridges and pontoons, which required spending 600 million meticals (US$19 million) on repairs.

Mozambique currently has 30,000 kilometres of classified roads, of which just 6,000 kilometres are paved. The remainder require maintenance and other work on a regular basis.
