Construction of the first phase of the deep-water port at Cabinda, North of Luanda in Angola, began last week.

Work currently underway will be implemented in three phases and is the result of a public-private partnership. The first phase of the construction will deal with port infrastructure and formation of a 100-hectare cargo services area.

Figures provided by the concessionaire responsible for construction and future operation of the port indicate that the first phase includes construction of a 775m quay.

Early stages of the work have been awarded to South African company, Franki Africa, according to Brian Fuggle, chairman of Caioporto.

Provincial governor, Aldina Catembo, said the new port would speed up exports of oil and gas from the Malongo oil field, making Cabinda a support hub for the neighbouring republics of Congo-Brazzaville and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
