The rain caused road closures, accidents and forced some people to evacuate their homes, Parts of Alexandra, Soweto, and Tshwane were hit hardest by the heavy rains. Disaster management’s Elias Sithole said one of the areas that were hit hard by the floods was the Cape Town informal settlement in Soweto where over 200 people had to be relocated to the Kliptown community hall after they lost their shacks. The floods have claimed the lives of three people, including an eight-year-old, who drowned during the heavy rains that began on Friday.
Sithole told EWN: “We’ve got one confirmed death on the west rand and then there is two in the City of Johannesburg, and these cases are related to drowning. There might be another case where rescue teams are busy with a search operation.” Sithole further said that road flooding was reported in parts of Ekurhuleni, with no fatalities and damages reported.
