For the first time in the history of its existence, City Power has received a Moody’s rating – a long-term national scale rating of A1.za This rating affirms City Power’s continued financial stability, liquidity and operational resilience.

As articulated in the Growth and Development Strategy (GDS) 2040, the City of Johannesburg is striving to become a world class African city. The utility is a strategic asset of the City of Johannesburg and plays a critical role in enabling a range of strategic plans expressed in the City’s development plan.

The utility is implementing a radical and pragmatic high performance plan, to streamline internal structures and processes towards a more customer centric organisation, intolerant of non-compliance with the legislative and regulatory framework it operates within. In the last year, Sicelo Xulu, the MD of City Power and his management team have conducted a comprehensive analysis of the internal environment with the intention to identify factors affecting the utility’s performance.

In his drive to transform the operations of the utility and address identified performance gaps, Mr Xulu has been unapologetic about clamping down on non-performance, unnecessary expenditure and abuse of the remuneration policy. His radical but pragmatic vision of creating a high-performance organization is geared towards creating operational efficiencies and a culture change towards zero tolerance for poor performance and complacency. Elaborating on the business strategy, he said:

“We have been able to achieve financial stability over the years despite receiving a qualified audit report. We have reviewed our business model and prepared a strategy to transform our operations and business process.”
