Lafarge is building a better Cape Town | Infrastructure news

When Cape Town Municipality was designing its Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system, they needed to create clearly identified dedicated bus lanes in coloured concrete. The challenge was to provide a long-lasting colour able to withstand heavy traffic in a marine environment.

The ideal solution was Lafarge South Africa’s Artevia coloured decorative concrete, which is exceptionally durable and contains integral UV-stable colour pigments. The BRT system provides a quick, comfortable and cost-effective public transport service that will increasingly persuade motorists to leave their cars at home. The transport system is also a significant environmental benefit as it not only reduces traffic congestion but also decreases harmful emissions by replacing a high volume of cars with modern buses driven by latest technology diesel engines. Lafarge’s Readymix team supplied 6 000 m3 of Artevia coloured concrete in red pigment to form 14 km of the two metre-wide bus lane that will provide commuters with a better connection between Atlantis and Melkbos for decades to come.
