Ngqura Container Terminal sets monthly cargo handling record | Infrastructure news

TPT terminal handled a record 63,857 TEU during August

Ngqura Container Terminal (NCT) operated by Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) hit a record level for container handing volumes during August.

The South African terminal handled a record 63,857 TEU in August, of which 18,725 was imports, 16,444 exports and 28,688 transhipment cargo destined for other regional ports.

Compared to June, which saw the facility handle 47,614 TEUs, these freight volumes for August signal the highest ever handled in one month shipping via the container terminal.

In a statement, Transnet attributed the surge in volumes to both an increase in market demand and the reefer cargo season. The terminal handled 45,488 TEU in the comparable month representing year-on-year growth of 28.8 percent.

“As Transnet Port Terminals, we are pleased to have handled these volumes,” said TPT’s General Manager, Eastern Cape, Siya Mhlaluka.

“The GCH record performance has been made possible by teamwork and improvements in vessel and yard planning. These volumes also have significant economic benefit because faster and more efficient container handling has ripple effects for the rest of the supply chain.”

The record throughput has ignited a renewed sense of enthusiasm among staff in the terminal according to Mhlaluka, who praised staff performance, particularly in the light of the challenging weather during this time of the year.
