A demonstration plant to produce locally developed thin-film solar module technology was opened in Stellenbosch this week.
The photovoltaic pilot line has been commissioned by Photovoltaic Technology Intellectual Property (PTiP) in partnership with German engineering company Singulus Technologies. PTiP aims to supply thin-film solar modules with high local content to planned and future photovoltaic (PV) projects in the country.
The R180-million, 3 500 m² semi-commercial facility is designed to serve as a state-of-the-art research and development facility for commercial-scale GICS modules.
According to PTiP CEO Prof. Vivian Alberts, PV technology is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. “The commissioning and official opening of this CIGS pilot facility in South Africa confirms the goals of the South African government to support and promote alternative and renewable energies, based on locally developed IP and skills. It is an important step for a successful energy policy in our country,” says Alberts.
