The Langeberg Municipality is in the middle of its 2014/2015 financial year and most of its capital projects, focused on achieving the goals set out in the Integrated Development Plan, are nearing completion.
Maynard Johnson, Manager of Civil Engineering Services at the Langeberg Municipality, explained that the projects are designed to upgrade and improve infrastructure within the municipal area. He added that these projects will also make provision for the implementation of future developments such as housing projects.New reservoir in Bonnievale
The Engineering Services Department has been implementing several key projects since July last year. The largest project, which is currently underway, is the construction of a 3, 5 megalitre reservoir in Bonnievale. The reason for the project, which costs R14 170 700, is to store purified water, which residents and businesses in the area can utilise. Associated water infrastructure such as pipelines and pump stations will be installed to complete the entire project. The reservoir is expected to be complete by mid May this year.Water network upgrades
A sum of R2.9 million has been set aside to purchase a new Jet Vac machine to increase capacity on the sewerage systems within the Langeberg region. This high-pressure multi-purpose machine will benefit the entire region as its main purpose is to clear sewer blockages and clean storm water lines. Montagu’s wastewater treatment works will be upgraded.Consultants for this tender project, which costs R1 907 500, have already been appointed. The upgrade is expected to be complete by June this year.
The first phase of upgrading the storm water system in Bonnievale began in January last year and is expected to be completed by July (2015). New storm water lines and structures, to the value of R2 million, will also be installed. After the first phase is complete, the project will roll over to the 2015-2016 financial year. The rehabilitation of the water network, which benefits all areas within the Langeberg region, is currently under construction (telemetry phase). The project, which is valued at R2 067 430, involves the replacement of all the old water lines. Johnson mentioned that he is very pleased with the progress made on all the projects within the Civil Engineering Department thus far.
