The City of Johannesburg handed over 60 fully subsided freehold RDP housing units in Kliptown Extension 6, Soweto, to residents being relocated from the Chris Hani, Fred Clarke and Charter Square informal settlements.
Another group of 50 beneficiaries will take occupancy of their RDP houses later this month. The allocations are part of the Kliptown Urban Renewal Programme undertaken by the City of Johannesburg. The ongoing Urban Renewal Programme, which started in 2005, is aimed at clearing the Greater Kliptown area of informal settlements and providing residents with formal housing units. Flanked by Eldorado Park, Dlamini, Pimville and Moroka, the area comprises a retail node, limited formal housing and densely inhabited informal settlements.A phased approach
The relocation and allocation process is undertaken in a block-by-block, phased approach. Vacant land is first developed before families are moved into the area. The development is funded by the Gauteng Provincial Government’s Local Government and Housing Department in agreement with the City of Johannesburg. Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Councillor Parks Tau described the new houses handover as another development milestone for the community of Kliptown.“The primary objective of the Johannesburg Housing Department is to complete the redevelopment of Kliptown timeously.
“This also includes the re-housing of those residents living in informal structures – in the shortest and most viable timeframe possible while stimulating the development of the overall integrated Kliptown project through infrastructure investment,” Mayor Tau said.
