Access to piped water – Mpumalanga lags behind | Infrastructure news

kid drinkiing from tap imageOnly 29% of Mpumalanga households have access to piped water inside their dwelling. This is according to the recently released Mpumalanga Community Survey 2016 results.

Stats SA has so far released the provincial Community Survey 2016 results for four provinces, namely Limpopo, Free State, Eastern Cape and, most recently, Mpumalanga.

The Community Survey is a large-scale household sample survey which provides data on, population, health, migration, education and access to basic services. The 2016 survey was conducted between March and April 2016 and collected data from 1.3 million households across all South African communities.

 

Mpumalanga

According to the results, only 29% of households in the Mpumalanga had access to piped water inside the dwelling. A further 44.4% had access to piped water inside the yard and 5.4% had access to piped water from an access point outside the yard.

77.3% of households in the province reported that they had access to safe drinking water.

 

Eastern Cape

Three quarters of households in the Eastern Cape (75% or 1.3 million) have access to piped water. The number of households with access to a flush/chemical toilet increased from 776 222 in 2011 to 928 332 in 2016.

 

Free State

37.8% of households in the Free State had access to piped water inside the dwelling. A further 33.5% had access to piped water inside the yard and 23.7% had access to piped water from an access point outside the yard.

84.5% of households in the province reported that they had access to safe drinking water.

 

Limpopo

The proportion of Limpopo households with access to piped water has decreased to 80% (1 million) in 2016, from 83.6% (1,2 million) in 2011. The number of households with access to a flush/chemical toilet increased from 322 112 in 2011 to 402 442 in 2016.
