Transport Minister Dipuo Peters has congratulated the Limpopo Provincial Government and the Polokwane Municipality on its progress.
“We are pleased to see that the Polokwane IRPTN system penetrates through the heart of the CBD with a transit mall planned. Equally so, we are also pleased to notice that the municipality is giving full priority to public transport vehicles and non-motorised transport users, and heartened by the commitment to accommodate people with special needs and users with disabilities,” said Peters. “To the leadership of Polokwane in particular, and Limpopo in general we say well done. You have done South Africa proud. Together we move South Africa forward.” The Polokwane Municipality has decided on a name for its public transport system – Leeto la Polokwane – marking the start of the roll out of the city’s Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network (IRPTN). As one of the 13 cities identified to implement the IRPTN, Polokwane has been involved in public participation processes in pursuit of finding a suitable name for their public transport system. The first phase of Leeto la Polokwane, which means the Journey of Polokwane, will begin in about 18 months’ time. Phase one will include dedicated trunk routes from Seshego to the Central Business District, carrying an average of 15 000 passengers per weekday over the initial three years of operations.
