Refuse removal in the Ekurhuleni city of Kempton Park has been erratic for more than six months according to Alderman André du Plessis, DA shadow MMC for environmental development and waste management.
Talking to the Kempton Park express Du Plessis said the delays in refuse removal were due to the fact that the municipality’s waste department was unable to synchronise the wheelie bin roll-out with the procurement of modified trucks to accommodate the wheelie bins. “There have been numerous ward roll-out programmes. However, there are still not sufficient modified trucks to service all the areas where bins have been rolled out, the MMC told the community based newspaper. “As councillors we receive literally hundreds of complaints every week from irate residents whose refuse has not been collected on their scheduled days,” Du Plessis added.Erratic refuse removal woes
The municipality’s refuse removal woes date back to 2017 where resident’s in Germiston were also plagued by erratic removal schedules. In an article with the Germiston City News Wendy Morgan, the Ward 36 councillor, told the newspaper that the regular waste schedule was not being kept to.Morgan also attributed the delays to the roll-out of the wheelie bins.
Residents are putting out their bins, those who have still not bothered to collect a bin put out black bags and then they have to bring them in again after 8pm as the truck has not been to collect and then they try again the next day. “The danger of leaving your bin out overnight is that it will not be there in the morning. This is causing a boomerang effect as this then delays the next area’s collection schedule,” Morgan told the newspaper.
