Gautrain workers to down tools over wage dispute | Infrastructure news

Gautrain workers affiliated with the United National Transport Union (Untu) are set to go on strike on Monday following a deadlock in wage negotiations.

The union has rejected operating company Bombela’s offer of an 8% salary increase across the board. The Union is seeking a 10% increase as well as a housing allowance of R1 600. The union has also demanded a transport allowance and night shift allowance.

According to Steve Harris, general secretary of Untu, members voted in favour of a strike at a mass meeting held in Midrand.

In accordance with South Africa’s Constitution and labour legislation, Untu members at the Gautrain has no alternative than to embark on a protected strike to try and force their employer to agree to their demands. It is Untu’s last resort”.

The strike is expected to commence on July 30, 2018.
