As President Cyril Ramaphosa prepares to deliver his State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Thursday, the Presidency announced that he would also announce further measures to support Eskom’s efforts at recovery and operational stability.
Ramaphosa, together with the Eskom board, the ministers of finance, mineral resources, energy and public enterprises met in Cape Town on Tuesday to discuss an action plan to save the power utility. Eskom has been experiencing financial and operational problems.Eskom presented a report on the implementation of its Nine Point Plan focussing on key priorities one of them being to ensure that the country has uninterrupted electricity supply.
Despite South Africa being hit by power cuts in March, Eskom said the implementation of its winter plan has worked well and the country has a low risk of load shedding. The president has reiterated to the utility’s board that Eskom was the continent’s largest electricity producer and one of South Africa’s most strategic assets, critical to its growth and development.
