Tshwane assists schools to reduce carbon footprint | Infrastructure news

Tshwane’s eco-warriors have been hard at work reducing the carbon footprint of their schools and their efforts have not gone unnoticed with the top five schools receiving an award.

The Tshwane School Greening initiative was initiated in July 2016 with 50 schools citywide. The aim of the project was to encourage schools to reduce their carbon footprint, and promote values related to the conservation of natural resources and biodiversity.

Earlier this year the 14 High Schools were selected to participate in the Pre- World Environment Day Competition where eco warriors embarked on environmental initiatives in their schools focusing on water and energy conservation, waste minimisation and greening.

Environmental camp

The top five schools were awarded with an environmental camp sponsored by the Gauteng Agriculture and Rural Development in partnership with Junior Landcare Project. The top five winning schools namely were Olivenhoutbosch Secondary School, MH Baloyi Secondary, Dilopye Middle School, Jafta Mahlangu Secondary School and Dan Kutumela Secondary School.

They visited the Roodeplaat Nature Reserve and added to their eco-warrior knowledge with discussions on nature interpretation, water conservation and fire awareness. The winners also enjoyed an enviro quiz and talent shows during their visit.

Commenting on the camp, the municipality said: “The camp was educational and enlightening with various benefits. The camp activities helped educators and learners to develop an appreciation for the environment, understand the environmental issues faced today, and how they can make a difference to improve the environment.”
