A new Boeing 737-800 will shortly enter Comair Limited’s British Airways (BA) fleet as part of the airline’s fleet upgrade strategy.
The announcement coincides with news of the upcoming commencement of scheduled flights to Saint Helena, and a new code-share agreement between Comair and Qatar Airways that will add five new African destinations to the Arabian carriers route map. “Access to centrally-located airports within South Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and in the Indian Ocean islands gives our customers access to diverse business and leisure destinations,” says Comair CEO Erik Venter.Venter says the new aircraft will be fitted with vertical wingtip extensions to reduce drag and provide lift, while cutting fuel consumption and lowering the aircraft’s carbon footprint.
As of last year, 5 000 737-800’s were in operation and another 4 400 had been ordered. The aircraft seats up to 160 passengers and boasts 50% more carry-on bag space compared to previous generations.
