This facility is managed by Rent-a-Drum and the company has taken recycling one step further with a unique collection system from Finland.
Between 2007 and 2011 research on waste management systems in Namibia was carried out as part of a Finnish-Namibia municipal partnership programme. Rent-a-Drum was identified as the waste management company in which the Finnish systems in Africa.
Molok selected the company on the basis of the recycling facility which also has a weighbridge to record the volume of waste received, processed and dispatched. The company also launched a clear-bag recycling campaign in August 2010. At the start, some 28 tonnes were collected from households in Windhoek and this figure grew to 113 tonnes by September 2012.
As such, the Molok Deep Collection System was brought to the country with a pilot project in Ondangwa in the far north performed last year. This was followed by the installation of 11 MolokClassic containers for the Ondangwa Town Council on September 28. A further 19 MolokDomino concrete wells will be installed for the municipality of Walvis Bay during November.
The Molok Deep Collection system is an innovative waste management system that offers a clean, effective and efficient collection point for a variety of waste types and situations. More compact and hygienic than conventional methods and virtually odour free, the Molok Deep Collection System offers unrivalled advantages, particularly where space is limited. The key to the superior performance of the Molok Deep Collection System is vertical, underground design. Only 40% of the container is visible, while the remaining 60% is underground. This design means more storage capacity within less space, more compaction, fewer collection, fewer odours and less litter. Cleaning the bins takes under two minutes as the system is very efficient.
Rent-a-Drum has confirmed that the bins will be used for recyclables to enhance the rates in the country and ensure separation at source.
