Gauteng motorists to get clarity on e-tolls soon | Infrastructure news

Gauteng road users should have further clarity on the e-tolling system by the end of next week. The country’s deputy president, Kgalema Motlanthe, is holding a final round of talks with stakeholders this week.

Last week, the Constitutional Court paved the way for e-tolls to be rolled out.  It overturned an interdict preventing government from going ahead.

The inter-ministerial task team has already consulted labour federation, Congress of South African Trade Unions. Today it met the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance and will end with a meeting with the Road Freight Association.

The deputy president’s spokesperson, Thabo Masebe says: “At some point there will have to be a decision with regard to the way forward and we expect that soon after the conclusion of this round of talks. Government will sit down and assess the facts and then make a decision with regard to the future of the e-toll system.”

But, the outcome will be subject to the review process. Legal expert, Pierre de Vos says: “In November when the case is actually heard, the substance and the merits of the case will be heard and that court can decide to stop the e-tolling because it was unlawful or they can decide to endorse it in which case it will go ahead.”
