Maritime experts and registrars of ships in Africa met yesterday in Mombasa to launch a master plan meant to harmonise the maritime sector in the continent.
The conference dubbed “A new awakening for Africa’s Maritime industry” will focus on common policies to improve the industry in Africa. Speaking during a media briefing yesterday, Kenya Maritime Authority director General Nancy Karigithu said, “the African continent has failed to capitalise on its potentials.” She said maritime authorities have been acting individually hence failing to make an impact in the world Maritime sector. “African countries have had a low impact in the world’s maritime industry. This conference will help us deliberate on a strategic take-off in an integrated approach which will benefit the continent more,” said Karigithu. She said Africa needs a unified approach to address the African Maritime Sector to elevate it into a world class competitive industry. The three days conference has brought together chief executive officers from over 30 country’s maritime sectors. Karigithu said the forum will help advance Africa’s maritime agenda as per the African Maritime Transport Charter adopted by the African Union in 2010. Head of association of African Ship owners Ms Funmi Folorunso described the conference as an opening for the continents maritime and shipping industry.She said a common policy will see a rise in investment in the shipping industry and trade in the region. “This conference will see a new beginning in development and investment capacity on the maritime sector,” said Folorunso.
The experts will also formulate laws to protect the African resources in the continent’s water masses. It will also address concerns on cargo owners, ship construction and ownership, oil and gas exploration among others. Source: http://www.the-star.co.ke
