CAN DO cleans up the SA West Coast | Infrastructure news

Intrepid social change adventurers, Michael Baretta and Camilla Howard, have walked 500 km thus far to reach the deserted shores of the West Coast. This trek forms part of their 3 000 km hike, part of the 3000km CAN DO! Trekking for Trash expedition which began in early October. So far, Michael and Camilla have collected over 200kg of litter along the way and with the help of sponsors Nampak Bevcan, Nampak DivFood and Collect-a-Can, they are cleaning up the country’s shoreline whilst educating local communities about the environmental impact of litter.

Michael and Camilla took time out of their expedition to give an environmental awareness talk to factory workers at St Helena Bay Oceana Factory, before continuing their 30km-a-day target, reaching Laaiplek at 21:00.

The trek will continue for another six months and will see Michael and Camilla walking along the South African coastline (from Alexander Bayon the Namibian border to Kosi Bay on the Mozambican border) whilst collecting and recycling litter, as well as help raising funds for informal waste collectors.Michael and Camilla will walk approximately 20 to 30 km per day for seven months. According to statistics, the average human takes about 5000 and 7000 steps per day. There are about 1000 steps in a kilometre, which means that they will be walking a total of three million steps over the seven month period.

Michael and Camilla are documenting their trip via Twitter @Trekking4Trash and www.facebook.co.za/TrekkingForTrash
