A new railway line with a gauge of 1,435mm will be built from Mombasa via Nairobi to Kampala.

This new development was entered into by the governments of Kenya and Uganda who have signed an agreement to build the new line.

Along with this, Kenya has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the government of Ethiopia to build a new 1,435mm gauge railway to Addis Ababa from Lamu, the new port to be established north of Mombasa.

According to President Kibaki of Kenya, his government is collaborating with other countries in the region to improve regional connectivity.
