Motorists to and from Port Elizabeth, travelling towards Grahamstown, King William’s Town, East London – as well as holidaymakers heading to the Eastern Cape, can again use the N2 bypass between Grahamstown and the coastal city.
The provincial department of transport, together with the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral), have opened the N2 bypass to ease traffic. The road collapsed in mid-October due to torrential rain and flooding. Since then motorists were forced to use the R72 via Port Alfred when travelling to and from Port Elizabeth. The provincial department said the bypass would be close to the collapsed area. There would be a traffic sign 900m from where the bypass started and the bypass would be tarred.
Sanral-appointed contractor Concor Roads and Earthworks has been appointed to repair the damaged road. A spokesperson said: “Motorists are asked to reduce their speed to 40km/h over a 600m section of the bypass because of the road curvature. “There will be no stop/go signage in place.” Source: TNA
