The Eko Atlantic City in Nigeria has reached the halfway mark of its 10 million square kilometres reclaiming land project. The celebration comes at an important point in the development of this reclaimed land, once part of Victoria Island and lost to the Atlantic Ocean following decades of erosion due to long-shore drift.
The 10km2 expansion was conceptualised by Royal HaskoningDHV, working together with the developer, South Energyx Nigeria Ltd, to come up with a sustainable and permanent solution to the strong coastal erosion that has been afflicting the coastal area on the eastern side of the entrance to the Port of Lagos.Royal HaskoningDHV was responsible for the conceptual design, detailed marine designs, numerous studies related to the hydrology and hydraulics in and around the development, the environmental impact assessment of the dredging and reclamation works and the initial master plan.
Currently, Royal HaskoningDHV is supervising the marine works (rock revetment and reclamation) and Phase 2 of the environmental impact
