Panel discussion with Ronald van Lochem: CEO–Aquadam | Infrastructure news

What are your current focus areas and vision?

Aquadam is repositioning itself as a solutions provider rather than a supplier of products. Our extensive experience, coupled with our comprehensive range of storage tanks, enables us to be approached by anyone in a construction supply chain to customise a solution specific to their requirements.

Please supply a brief background to the company.

Aquadam has been supplying optimum liquid storage solutions to satisfied clients since 1972, and we currently store in excess of 3.5 billion litres of water every day. We take pride in playing a part in preserving water – the world’s most precious resource – but our expertise is not limited to water storage only. Collectively, Aquadam’s owners and management team have more than 65 years’ experience in the design and manufacture of containment structures. Because Aquadam is the only company in South Africa that designs and manufactures such a wide variety of steel tanks and concrete reservoirs, we are able to provide our clients with the right advice and the perfect storage solutions. All our construction materials (e.g. sand, cement, steel) are locally sourced. We believe that local procurement, design and production are good for the South African economy.

What new products areyou adding to your portfolio in the near future?

With the runaway success of the Muleby System Tank IA (MST IA) in mind we will be introducing the MST II Tank to our customers. This tank encapsulates our service philosophy of “from design to erection – all under one roof”. The MST is a prefabricated concrete tank, produced for the municipal, industrial and agricultural sectors with a pedigree stretching back 35 years. The MST II systems tanks are built with prestressed elements with a standard width of 2.40 m and a thickness of 170 to 200 mm and unprecedented heights of up to and including 8 m! The MST II elements are connected internally by means of horizontal prestressing and an ingenious waterproof concave-convex system. The vertical joints are sealed with a shrinkproof injection mortar. Greased corrosion-resistant steel cables are passed horizontally through the elements inside a 2-mm thick polyethylene sheath and tightened to >135 kN with precision tools. A waterproof solution for the wall and floor construction is obtained by means of spramex concrete on both sides of the wall and fitting expanding tape.

We also recently acquired the Southern Africa agency for the Galglass Epoxy Fusion Steel Tanks. These tanks are fairly new to the South African market and we believe that with the exceptional quality they provide and the whole list of usages for these tanks we have already captured a big market share. These tanks are corrosion resistant and do not need liners. The roof trusses and sheeting on these tanks can also be supplied in epoxy if the tank is to be used for special liquids These tanks can be built up to 30 million litre capacity!

What other products do you incorporate in your solutions driven service philosophy?

Our steel coated tank range includes Zincalume Coated Tanks(also known asFuture Tanks) andplain galvanized or colour coated corrugated (also known assmart tanks).

Our concrete reservoir range includes prestressed post tension panel reservoirs (also known as Muleby System Tank and seamless concrete reservoirs(also known as gunite damsor Naatlosebetondamme). We are the undisputed market leader in the manufacturing of gunite-based seamless, reinforced concrete reservoirs. All Aquadam products are engineer-designed to be cost-effective, safe and reliable, and to meet the most demanding quality standards. We carefully source our raw materials and produce all our materials in our own factory to ensure unsurpassed quality and performance.
