Contractor secures two high-profile construction projects | Infrastructure news

The Roadcrete Africa Division of Basil Read, the JSE-listed construction and engineering Group, has been awarded two new contracts with a combined value of R369 million. The first contract worth R11 million was awarded by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality for the completion of Contract HO 20/2008 for the construction of water and sewer network systems and toilet structures in Etwatwa, Ext. 18. The contract which commenced on 10 June 2013 will be completed in four months’ time.

The second project awarded by SANRAL is for the rehabilitation of the R23, Section 1, of the National Road between Platrand and Standerton in the Lekwa district of the Mpumalanga Province, comprising a total length of 26 km.

The contract value is R358 million and has a duration of 24 months starting 1 July 2013.

The scope of work entails the rehabilitation and strengthening of the existing road as well as structural works which will include the upgrading and widening of several bridges and major culverts due to the widening of the road and improving the hydraulic capacity of the structures. The vertical alignment of the road will also be improved at the structures and the road will be widened to accommodate passing lanes or wider surfaced shoulders.

Other works envisaged will include the cleaning, repairing and extension of existing minor culverts, the construction of sub-surface and side drains as well as clearing, grubbing, replacing road markings and road studs and minor appurtenant works such as road studs, guard rails and road signs.
