MUXUNGWE IS 100 KMS NORTH OF THE SAVE BRIDGE ON THE EN1 ROAD FROM INCHOPE TO VILANCULAS
It would seem that security convoys are still in effect, as reported below. The Convoy – Muxungwe to Save We have just returned from Vilanculas. We drove down to Vilanculas on Friday 9th August and returned to Harare Wednesday 14th August. All is well on the main road and we felt incredibly safe and secure. There are soldiers in every village and alongside parts of the road too. The convoy leaves from Muxungwe, just after the BP garage, at roughly 7.30am and 1.00pmThe traffic in the convoy drives on BOTH sides of the road and therefore you cannot drive on your own from Muxungwe to Save, as after the convoy has left Save Bridge and is returning to Muxungwe you will face hundreds of cars coming towards you on both sides of the road!
The convoy leaves Save Bridge at roughly 9.15 am and 3.00 pm. The time of the journey depends on how much traffic there is in the convoy and can range from one and a half hours to two and a half hours. And another – We came northbound from Save to Muxungwe yesterday. We got to the Save Bridge at 0930 to join the 10 am convoy – only to find that it was like a rolling Le Mans start with the convoy already leaving – small vehicles all mixed in with large trucks and as Martin says all the trucks trying to overtake each other so it is complete chaos with no discipline at all. There is only one lead vehicle which we never saw on Sunday but southbound it was a police pick up with flashing lights and no visible weapons. The convoy yesterday was strung out probably over 20 kms or more so quite what could be achieved if the back 1/3 or 1/4 was attacked I’m not really sure.
