Repairing water leaks in Ekurhuleni | Infrastructure news

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, the Department of Water Affairs, the Department of Public Works, and Rand Water will work together to repair leaks in a bid to curb water wastage.

The leak repair project was launched by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and is expected to run until January 2016. This is after the Water Demand Management Analysis found that approximately 43 000 residential areas in Tsakane, Langaville and Geluksdal have high volumes of water wastage.

The project involves conducting leak testsat properties, fixing or replacing leaking plumbing items, refurbishment of underground pipes and yard connections, condition rating of underground pipes, and installation of meters on properties. Approximately 27 schools will also have their leaks repaired.

Metro’s spokesperson Themba Gadebe told SAnews.gov.za that the project is community based and labour intensive in line with the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) principles. It will create 377 jobs in the fields of plumbing and general work, and in the employment of community liaison officers, community facilitator supervisors, community facilitators and quality controllers.”
