Taking exporting to the next level | Infrastructure news

In the lead up to the 24th Cape Chamber of Commerce Western Cape Exporter of the Year (EOY) Competition, the Cape Chamber will be running a workshop for Companies which have excelled in exporting.

Attendance is free and open to companies registered in the Western Cape to run a business, are currently exporting products or services and who have been operational for more than three years.

The ‘Taking exporting to the next level’ Information Workshop and Expo is sponsored by SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority), We will be showcasing the SAMSA Exporter Design Award which has been selected as one of the World Design Capital 2014 projects. This trophy is awarded to the business that shows the use of local design skills and expertise.

Service providers such as Seda, Wesgro, Productivity SA, Exporter’s Club Western Cape, Export Credit Insurance Corporation of South Africa SOC, Grant Thornton, SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority), Western Cape Fine Foods Initiative, Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI), Silicon Cape, the Trade Law Centre, and the Cape Chamber’s African Commercial Dispute Settlement Centre, will be in attendance to provide relevant exporting and legal advice to businesses at the workshop.

The 2013 Absa-Cape Chamber Exporter of the Year judges will be present to provide feedback  to previous Exporter finalists and other interested companies on what makes a winning entry.They will provide feedback: 2013 Judges were: Fran Stewart (CCDI), George Ohle (Trade Solutions – Global Markets, Absa), Dr Gerald Wolman (Past President Cape Chamber), Jason Bell (WESGRO), Selma Schwartz-Clausen (SAMSA) and Terry Gale (Exporters Club).

A key challenge for many exporters is how to protect their company assets in foreign countries. A representative from the Dispute Settlement Centre will be available to outline the benefits of using mediation and arbitration when dealing with cross-border disputes and how to construct contracts to govern potential conflicts. Trudi Hartzenberg from tralac (Trade Law Centre will be providing input on Trade Agreements and how these impact on exporting decisions.

Exporters will hear success stories from our previous competition winners and finalists on what their entry in the competition has done for them. There will also be hints on doing business in foreign markets, meeting wih international representatives, tralac
