Tanzania’s government is set to initiate a 32 billion Tanzanian shilling water project at Kirya village, in Mwanga District, Kilimanjaro Region.

The Minister for Water, Prof Jumanne Maghembe announced the news recently at a public rally held at Kirya Njiapanda.

During the event, Maghembe assured citizens that water problems in the village would soon be a thing of the past., but cautioned them to value all government projects and preserve them as their heritage, according to local broadsheet Tanzania Daily News.

He added that Tanzania’s government is committed to fulfilling all its electoral pledges included in its manifesto, also saying that it was up to the people to deliver for their own benefit and that of future generations.

The project is being financed by several stakeholders, including the Bank for Economic Development on Africa (BADEA). Water infrastructure tabled for irrigation extends beyond in Mwanga into theSame and Korogwe districts as well.

Plans to establish a supply company are also in the works. The new organisation will be in charge of pumping water from the sources to areas that have been experiencing water scarcity for a long time.

“The government is committed to ending water blues here at Njiapanda, we will have a water supply company right here in the village (Kirya), the project is huge and once it is completed you will be happy,” he told assembled press.

A water purifying machine will be installed before water is pumped to the villages with two drifts – one from Mwanga to Handeni and the other from Njiapanda Kirya to Kisangara up to Kiverenge hill.

From Kiverenge hill water will be pumped to Same in Ruvu Mferejini and Ruvu Jiungeni villages. Other villages set to benefit are Bora, Kagongo, Nyabinda Mvungu, Mangulai, Kirya, Makanya and Kisangara
