Latest achievements in tyre recycling | Infrastructure news

Early this week, The Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (REDISA) released its key achievements from 1 December last year the end of October this year.

In just that short time, 45 690 tonnes of waste tyres have been collected, with the exact breakdown per region provided below:

  • Free State 1 893
  • Northern Cape 2 158
  • Eastern Cape 4 129
  • Western Cape 8 264
  • KZN 9 374
  • Mpumalanga 2187
In this time 1532 jobs have been created. There are 26 Depots currently operational nationally in the following areas:

Gauteng

  • Midrand
  • Mamelodi
  • Pretoria East
  • Springs
  • Hetherley
  • Onderstepoort
  • Mamelodi
  • Soshanguve
  • Nelmapius
  • Watloo

Western Cape

  • Vissershok
  • Mossel Bay

KwaZulu-Natal

  • Pietermaritzburg
  • Clairwood
  • Ladysmith
  • Jacobs
  • Hammersdale

Mpumalanga

  • Witbank
  • Ferronbank
  • Bronkhorstpruit

Eastern Cape

  • East London
  • Port Elizabeth

Northern Cape

  • Kimberley

Free State

  • Bloemfontein
The annual report reveals that 149 SMME transporter operations are collecting tyres as per the REDISA Plan and rollout.

In addition the organisation is currently collecting from 1 453 dealers, and as the Plan continues in its five year rollout, it plans to have more dealers and collection points will be collected from nationwide.

Independent auditing

During September this year REDISA initiated an independently run industry survey aimed at measuring the current sentiments of REDISA among key industry players, as well as identifying issues or concerns that need to be addressed by REDISA.
