Johannesburg Water has put this weekend’s planned water cuts on hold, after initially warning residents that maintenance on a pump station would mean a lack of water.
The planned maintenance of Eikenhof Pump Station was supposed to take place from Saturday at 18:00 until Sunday at 19:00. However, Johannesburg Water spokesperson Eleanor Mavimbela said the planned maintenance was postponed in order to sort out a few logistical issues, Fin24 reported. “The maintenance will still take place once a new date has been set,” she told Fin24. “Communication will be sent out in time prior to the maintenance taking place for residents to be [made] aware.”She said residents had no reason to fear any major issues, saying: “We do not have any maintenance issues at the moment and if any arises, once again, we will ensure that the residents affected are aware.”
Four months ago, Johannesburg residents suffered water shortages following an outage at one of Rand Water’s main pumps. There were also fears that the area could face water shortages due to acid mine drainage issues. “We would like to encourage residents of the City of Johannesburg to save water as it is a precious resource,” said Mavimbel. “Johannesburg Water currently has a number of projects being executed throughout the city in order to ensure that residents continue to receive good quality water and services.” –Fin24
