The government of Mauritius has spelled out major reforms to address the long standing problem of domestic water supply.

The most prominent issue the Government Programme 2015-2019 aims to tackle is the mobilisation of water resources and infrastructure including the renewal and replacement of pipes to reduce water loss and ensure a year round water supply.

As part of the drive to improve domestic water supply, the government said it plans to complete the Bagatelle Dam within a year and construct a new dam at Rivière des Anguilles to improve water supply in the Southern region.

Furthermore, provision is being made to increase the capacity of La Nicolière reservoir to satisfy growing demand in the North.

New technologically advanced water treatment plants will be constructed at La Nicolière, Bagatelle and Rivière des Anguilles. New projects for construction of dams are also being envisaged along rivers in addition to further development of ground water to mobilise additional water resources.

Regarding the wastewater sector, the Mauritian government says it will review the wastewater master plan to ensure the most competitive wastewater disposal technology for environmental protection.

The programme will address the sanitation problems in the former CHA housing estates and the regions which are vulnerable to environmental hazards related to wastewater disposal.
