The Mombasa Port Program will receive a big boost with an additional $5 million of funding granted by the UK government by Britain’s Department for International Development (DFID).

The funds granted to Trademark East Africa will be used for the construction of access roads between the Moi International Airport and the Port of Mombasa in Kenya.

The 5.3 km Port Reitz/Airport road will be converted into a dual carriage way.

The 15-month project is set to start from April to June in 2016, which includes widening of the existing access roads to seven meters on each side and improving traffic intersection and traffic lights installation.

TMEA said the upgrade is expected to take up to 30% of traffic from the Kipevu West container terminal, reducing port access time, which will also accommodate about 30% of the traffic from the existing terminal.
