South Africa has taken delivery of 95 Chinese-made electric locomotives. They were delivered by Transnet, in collaboration with the Chinese Zhuzhou Electric Locomotives Company, last week.
Eighty-five of the 95 locomotives were assembled in Pretoria at Transnet’s Koedoespoort Engineering Plant. The locomotives are part of Transnet’s long-term fleet renewal programme, which seeks to increase capacity and reduce the average age of the country’s locomotives fleet. It also forms part of government’s national infrastructure development programme, designed to improve social and economic infrastructure and boost the economy.
Transnet says the locomotives will enable it to more efficiently transport rail freight and make it a more attractive transport mode.
