Two eThekwini Municipal employees who were injured in an accident last week Friday, 28 August 2015, are still in a critical condition in hospital. The third team member tragically died over the weekend.

The eThekwini Water team were carrying out routine maintenance to valves along Tatford Road, Phoenix when they were struck by a speeding vehicle.

One of the workers, a 38-year-old Municipal Handyman supervisor was in a stable condition when he left the accident scene.

However, when he arrived at the hospital it was discovered that he had severe internal injuries including a head injury and crushed pelvic bones. He died after going into cardiac arrest later that evening.

The Municipal employee had worked for the Municipality since 2006, becoming a permanent staff member in 2014.

The two other employees remain in hospital.

One employee, sustained minor injuries and was released from hospital on Friday. However, his condition worsened and he was readmitted to hospital over the weekend where he is being monitored.

Doctors have amputated one leg. He remains in a stable but serious condition in hospital. Both men had been recently employed by the Municipality.

“They were young and able bodied, full of enthusiasm. They had bright futures ahead of them. They had great potential and were an asset to the Municipality. We wish them a speedy recovery.

“We also extend our sincerest condolences to the family of the employee who sadly passed away,” said Richard Mngoma, Deputy Head for Water Operations.
