“President Jacob Zuma on Sunday 30 August 2015 called for extraordinary caution and strict adherence to the rules of the road following the death of 36 people when a bus overturned on the R408 in the Eastern Cape over the weekend.

Zuma said South Africa was mourning the loss of so many lives on the country’s roads stating that this senseless loss of life is unacceptable and it is happening more frequently on our roads, he went on to say that the law enforcement authorities can play their part but it is mainly up to the drivers to ensure that they adhere to the rules of the road in order to save the lives of our people” – News 24, 30 August 2015.

With the above in mind, Intelligence Transfer Centre (ITC) will be hosting the 7th Annual Road Safety Summit on 3, 4 & 5 November 2015 at the CSIR, Pretoria.

Notable speakers expected to take to the podium are Christopher Hlabisa, DDG: Road Transport, National Department of Transport, MEC for Gauteng Department of Community Safety, Hon Sizakele Nkosi Malobane, as well the Registrar, Mr Japh Chuwe, Road Traffic Infringement AGgency (RTIA).

This year the conference will feature 3 live video links with ACT Government (Australia), Canada Association of Road Safety Professionals (Canada), and National Transportation Safety Board – Washington DC (United States).

Critical issues to be discussed include: Creating “one voice” across all Provinces to promote road safety, taking ownership of road user behaviour to inspire a mind change, implementing pedestrian interventions to minimise fatalities at dangerous crossings, an update on the rolling out of AARTO and the implementation of the Driver Demerit Points System and Building effective road safety initiatives through strategic PPP’s to mention a few.
