Mercedes-Benz revealed the first look at its upcoming pickup truck in the form of the new X-Class Concept. At the launch which took place in Stockholm, Sweden on Tuesday, the German automaker announced to the public that its new double-cab would be the world’s first true “premium” pickup truck. Mercedes-Benz spent 17 months developing and constructing the dual-cab which was showcased in two designs: the Stylish Explorer and the Powerful Adventurer. Dieter Zetsche, Daimler chairman and head of Mercedes-Benz cars, said in a statement that “With the Mercedes-Benz pickup, we will close one of the last gaps in our portfolio.” He added that the company’s target was to offer customers vehicles to match their specific needs. “The X-Class will set new standards in a growing segment,” he said. The X-Class will be manufactured in Argentina and Spain in 2017 and will primarily be sold in Europe, Australia, South America and South Africa.
“South Africa will be one of the first markets to receive the model,” Zetscke said, and will be launched in early 2018.

X-Class features
The double-cab will have:
- Three engines: A 3.0-litre V6 and a 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine. A 2.5-litre four cylinder petrol will also be offered.
- Two drivetrains: A manual and a 7G-Tronic automatic
- With the V6 oil-burner the double-cab will be capable of towing “up to 3,5 tons”, and will boast a payload of “more than 1,1 tons”
A price tag has not yet been revealed, however Mercedes said the X-Class “will be positioned in the segment at an attractive price”.
