Two people were killed after a large waste removal truck overturned on Soutpansberg Road in Kempton Park on Saturday, according to paramedics in a News24 report.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said “One person from the truck was found lying at the back. He had sustained severe traumatic injuries. Sadly, there was nothing that paramedics could do for him and he was declared dead on the scene.”

Two more people were trapped halfway under the cabin of the waste truck, which was found lying on its side next to the road.

Paramedics said that one of the victims was found with fatal injuries and declared dead at the scene while the other was in a critical condition.

“Paramedics were unable to remove him from underneath the truck and a large towing vehicle was called to the scene to partially lift the truck to free him,” Vermaak said. Once he was freed, paramedics discovered that he had sustained severe traumatic injuries.

“He was later placed on life support and a medical helicopter was called to the scene to airlift him to hospital,” Vermaak said, after rescue workers struggled for more than an hour to free the trapped man.

Local authorities attended the scene and an investigation has been opened.
