Roads reopened after flash floods in Gauteng | Infrastructure news

flood-1The flash floods that washed through the streets of Gauteng last week did not cause any structural damage to infrastructure, Gauteng MEC for roads and transport Ismail Vadi said on Friday.

Despite the temporary closure of several roads, Vadi said that the department would continue to work with local municipalities to ensure that infrastructure was maintained in order to make sure road safety was not compromised.

Vadi also said that the transport department’s main emergency road maintenance teams were on standby to assist disaster management services should excessive flooding should recur.

As more rain has been predicted, Vadi assured the public that the situation was being monitored on an ongoing basis and requested that residents and motorists be on high alert and avoid crossing flooded bridges and roads.

The transport department said that roads that were closed due to debris from the flash floods had been cleared. The following roads were reopened for motorists:

  • Witkoppen Bridge
  • Main Street Bridge
  • The R55 bridge near Kyalami
  • The R24 and R21 roads towards OR Tambo International Airport near Gillooly’s Interchange
  • The M1 near Marlboro
  • The K60 in Rivonia
