After much hype around Mercedes-Benz’s new double cab, its new X-Class bakkie has finally been unveiled.

The vehicle is the first of its brand and will be introduced to the South African market early next year.

The German carmaker held the launch in Cape Town. It announced that the bakkie will boast different engines, including a V6 turbo diesel, when it reaches the local market. However, vehicle prices were not disclosed.

In Germany the entry-level price will be equivalent to R555,000.

Engine models

The new bakkie’s will have engine capacities which will include the X 200, X 220d, X 250d and X 350d. The X 200 has 122kW and 238Nm of torque, is petrol-powered, however it will not be sold in South Africa.

The X220d is diesel-powered and has 120kW and 403Nm of torque.

The X 250d has 140kW and 450Nm, and the X350d sits at the top of the range as the most powerful in its class with 190kW and 550Nm of torque. The X350d will only be available in the country from mid-2018.

Mercedes-Benz said the X-Class will be available with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic, depending on the model.

The company also indicated that it was happy with the bakkie’s interior design which boasts a 21.3cm COMAND infotainment screen with access to satellite navigation, radio, Bluetooth, USBs, fuel consumption, music etc. It also includes a 360-degree camera, Lane Keep Assist, and Traffic Sign Assist and additional other safety measures.
