The KwaZulu Natal government has stepped in to resolve a stand-off between disgruntled workers and the Ugu District Municipality according to media reports.
IOL reported on Sunday that an agreement had been reached between the municipality and its striking staff who were allegedly responsible for sabotaging water supply to the South Coast communities. The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) deployed a task team to the embattled municipality and according to acting MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs; Weziwe Thusi, the workers will return to work immediately. “Water and sanitation services would be restored soon and the recovery process of the district’s water systems is continuing,” she said in a statement.“It is our duty to ensure that all our municipalities live up to their constitutional mandate without any impediments,” said Thusi.
South Coast residents have been without water for two weeks, following a strike by South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU) members according to reports by eNCA.
