Sinkhole tears up Laudium streets - Infrastructure news

The sinkhole that started on a section of the R55 Quagga road in Laudium, South of Pretoria, has deteriorated leading to the partial collapse of the road and parts of a nearby home.

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport closed part of the road last week and advised motorists to use alternative routes as the road was deemed unstable.

Premier David Makhura accompanied by Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga, Roads and Transport MEC Ismail Vadi, Tshwane Roads and Transport MMC Sheila Senkubuge visited the area on Monday to assess the situation.

According to the Gauteng provincial government it will cost between R50 million and R60 million to repair the road.

Makhura says that law enforcement will be on site for 24 hours to ensure the safety of members of the public. The Premier did not indicate when the road would be fixed and re-opened to traffic.
