Cleaning up water quality in Struisbaai | Infrastructure news

The Cape Agulhas Local Municipality in the Western Cape now boasts top class water quality thanks to the newly unveiled Struisbaai Wastewater Treatment Works.

Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pamela Tshwete, recently handed over the project, which had been earmarked by the municipality as critical to augment supply and improve water quality.

According to the department a total of 1556 houses from Struisbaai and L’Agulhasare benefitting from this improved water quality.

Catering for future development

“There was a need to augment the present lagoon or oxidation dam system so that the upgraded works could service the treatment requirements of both coastal towns of Struisbaai and L’Agulhas, considering present and future development and growth,” Sputnik Ratau, Director Media Liaison noted.

He added that the works will further benefit the 300 low cost houses being developed, as well as the new housing area to be developed in Bredasdorp.

“The good news about this project is that 24 temporary jobs were created at the time of construction, and the process controller at the treatment plant is a permanent employee. Most importantly the water quality has improved adequately,” Ratau said.

Improving lives

Commenting on the project Deputy Minister Tshwete said it was a big step towards improving the lives of the people.

She concluded by urging the Cape Agulhas Local Municipality to take ownership and budget for the maintenance of this project, as this would yield long term success of the project.
