Another Metrorail train went up in flames in Cape Town this week at Retreat station. The fire has prompted the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) to act against the malicious damage to its property by constructing a wall.
According to a report by TimesLIVE the agency is set to spend R70 million to construct a wall in the worst affected areas of Metrorail infrastructure in Cape Town in an effort to protect its assets and ensure commuter safety. The incident follows one at Cape Town station on Saturday which left two coaches destroyed, platform cabling damaged and the city with a bill of R30 million. Richard Walker, Western Cape regional head of Prasa, told TimesLIVE that they would be erecting 30km of wall to protect their assets and infrastructure. The latest fires it the fifth such incident in Cape Town this year and Transport union Untu firmly believes that there are efforts to sabotage Cape Town and the Western Cape’s train system.
The system suffered another blow this week when a goods train derailed near Malmesbury leading to several trains having to be cancelled. The union has reiterated its call for the Police Minister to set up a task team to probe these incidents and a series of others seen in the City in recent months.
