World toilet day was commemorated recently, but for thousands of people in rural and even urban areas in the Eastern Cape this day holds no meaning. Many resort to do-it-yourself facilities, inadequate and dangerous stop gap measures. Thousands of pit latrines are also still in use in schools across the country and children have drowned in these.
